No Filter

I'm so glad I decided to keep the latest Britt Nicole cd just for me. It was on sale during the Black Friday event and I grabbed it thinking I may give it out as a gift. I love music and eventually, like January, I opened it as a gift to me. My 3yo daughter really loves this one song in particular, No Filter. I enjoy it too but its just so cute that she requests that I play the "picture nus" song.

The lyrics speak to me about how its so easy to portray my life, particularly through social media, but even just with family or at church, that things are going great. We can get good on putting on an act, don't we. Part of it might be that I don't want to burden anyone or I don't even understand what the problem is. Some things are best to be private between a couple or family. I think it gets interesting when we deal with the pressure to be "ok" and "happy". Are people going to be able to come along side of you and offer support if they aren't let in to know that there is something you may need prayer for? I'm not saying to put it all out there on front street, know your audience. Seek God's direction first. Pause before you post, or text or call (do we still do that?).

Here's the kicker, our kids are watching us without the filter. Our kids see us fail. Our kids see us be human. And that's ok. I think they need to. I want them to see me being authentic. God also sees us, the us that we don't let anyone in on. He made us, he knows us intimately. Psalm 44:21 reminds us that He knows the secrets of our hearts. Psalms 139 is full of rich reminders of God's connection to us.

Singing along to "No Filter".

Dear God, Thank you for loving me so much. Thank you for my daughter's sweet voice. Thank you that we can connect through music. Bless those that may be reading this today and help us all to be authentic. Help us not to compare our lives to those of celebrities or people we see in our communities or churches that appear to have it together. Thank you enabling me to see each new day. I hope I'm getting closer to You with each one and being a light for my family and those who know me. In Your Holy Name, Amen.

(updated 2/5/18, originally published 1/1/17) Even after a year I still need to be cautious about getting too caught up in how many followers or likes there are on this blog. My uncle is a missionary in Puerto Rico and has been for over 40 years. He was in town on furlough Christmas of 2016 and I was privileged to hear him speak. He mentioned how people that follow the mission may get concerned with how big or small the number of people there are in the PR congregation. My uncle said, " its not in the numbers" . Absolutely! It is too easy to get drawn into the statistics of how to get more likes and more reach on Facebook specifically. It's not about that. It's about God's love. God's love is more than a Bible verse post on a cool image. It is so much MORE!!! Look outside and see the undeniable work of our most amazing Father. See the way He reveals himself in our children's smiles. For awhile it seemed that every time I heard a crash or boom fr

A Fresh Coat of Paint

This weekend when the kids were at their dad's, I touched up the paint around the house. It was awesome of the landlord to leave some in the place so it matches perfectly. After a year and a half of living here, there are some areas of the walls that have crayon, marker, stickers that peeled the paint, and other typical wear and tear of living in a house with young kids. At first it may not seem like that big of a deal to touch up paint, but wow did it give me a boost in my outlook. A bonus blessing of the weekend was that I was able to go on a walk and enjoy a little sunshine. While I was out, the paint was able to dry. When I got home, it was like I walked into a new atmosphere. The place felt refreshed. I could walk up the stairwell and feel like it was so much cleaner and the energy was renewed. It was and still is amazing a day later. I know it won't always be this "clean" feeling but for now I'm savoring it. This morning while preparing to watch church o

I Am More

This poem may help you to understand my heart and the purpose of the blog. I actually thought about changing the name of the blog to "More Than Just A Mom" but for now, I am not. Something I notice lately is how often I say or think, "I just" ( I just want to get somewhere on time. I just want you to listen to me so I can keep you safe .), or how often I simply add "just" to a statement. I use it in an exhaustive way but what comes to mind for me is that God is just. That may or may not have anything to do with this poem. Anyways, here is my poem: I Am More I am not the one who has it all together I am more than a beautifully made up face I am designed perfectly by the Creator of the universe I am not the dent in the car or the chip in the paint I am more valuable than any earthly thing I am redeemed by a king who died for me I am not the problems or traumas in my life I am more than the dysfunction in my relationships I am a child of God
